Hilo March
Original Melody: Joseph Kapeau Ae`a
The Hilo March is a well-known Hawaiian march and is played by many musicians, especially steel guitarists, Polynesian and non-Polynesian alike. It was written by Joseph Kapeau Ae`a in 1881 and was originally called “Ke Ala Tuberose”. The lyrics of the song tell of the beauty of Hilo (the largest city on the Big Island of Hawaii) as well as the beauty of the Lehua flower.

Elizabeth Alohikea

Mai Poina Oe Iaʻu
Original Melody: Elizabeth Alohikea
Written by Elizabeth Alohikea, Mai Poina Oe Iaʻu is a poignant Hawaiian love song with the chorus featuring the words “Forget Me Not”. As with many love songs, there are multiple meanings (or “Kaona”) buried in the song’s lyrics. Queen Liliʻuokalani created an embroidered ribbon with the words “Mai Poina Oe’la’” while she was imprisoned in Iʻolani Palace after the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
